Water-Based Polyurethane Adhesive Systems for Automotive Manufacturing

Water-based polyurethane adhesives are evaluated for joining the fabrics, foams and carriers used in automotive interior manufacturing. This page covers formulated adhesive products and their specified companion components; it is not a catalogue of polyurethane resin raw materials.

Choose a candidate by the actual bonding interface, production method and required verification. R-5670 with R-60C is one system to discuss with RELANET, subject to current technical documentation and trials on your materials.

What is supplied?

A formulated adhesive must be assessed as a complete product, including its specified curing agent where applicable. A resin dispersion name alone does not describe mixing, application or bonding conditions. Ask for the product identity, supplied components, current technical data and safety information before planning a trial.

Confirm packaging, storage and handling requirements with the applicable documents. Do not substitute a curing agent or transfer a mixing instruction from another adhesive because the products share a polyurethane description.

How do water-based PU, PUD and two-component systems differ?

Water-based PU describes a polyurethane system using an aqueous medium. PUD refers to a polyurethane dispersion. Two-component describes a supply and mixing arrangement in which specified components are combined for use. These terms describe different aspects of a material and are not interchangeable.

A PUD designation alone does not establish whether a finished adhesive is one- or two-component. Identify the actual commercial system and its instructions rather than treating a search term as a product specification.

Select by part and process

Begin with the layer stack, then identify which interface needs bonding. Headliners, door trim and instrument panels create different geometry, handling and aging questions. A material accepted for a flat coupon still requires evaluation on the shaped part.

  • Headliner: separate early holding, wet coating sag and heat-related assembly movement.
  • Door trim: record edge wrapping, springback and the condition of the plastic carrier.
  • Instrument panel: describe curved areas, local draw and the release sequence.
  • General lamination: define fabric, foam and carrier grades, application sides and pressing conditions.

Use the product page as a document entry point

The R-5670 page brings together the proposed R-5670/R-60C pairing and the status of existing website data. Request the latest issued TDS and SDS for the relevant components. Historical website values require document and test-condition checks before use in a purchasing specification.

An application page explains what to evaluate; it does not establish that a product has passed that application. Review adhesion, aging, appearance and process handling as separate decisions.

Provide enough information for a useful first trial

Send the material grades, layer drawing or description, surface preparation, coating method, drying or activation steps and cycle requirements. Include the intended test method and acceptance criteria where available. If the process is still under development, identify the unknowns so the trial can resolve them.

Agree on specimens, conditioning, observations and decision criteria before testing. Keep the trial record linked to the actual material batches and technical-document versions.

Questions and answers

Is PUD another name for a two-component adhesive?

No. PUD describes a polyurethane dispersion, while two-component describes how specified components are supplied and mixed. Check the individual product instructions.

Can one adhesive be used on every interior substrate?

A common material name is not enough to confirm suitability. Grade, surface condition, layer structure and process conditions must be evaluated.

How do I request technical data?

Email the product or application of interest together with your material stack and process. Ask for the current issued TDS, SDS and a sample evaluation.
