Adhesives for Automotive Lamination and Wrapping

Lamination joins defined material layers; wrapping also requires the covering to follow the part geometry and remain in position through release and curing. Select an adhesive candidate from the actual interfaces and process, not from the material name alone.

Use this page to organize fabric, foam, PP and ABS bonding requirements across automotive interior parts. Then follow the relevant headliner, door trim or instrument panel route for the geometry and validation questions specific to that component.

Identify the surface at each interface

List each layer in order and identify the face to be bonded. A fabric backing, foam skin or existing coating can define the practical interface more accurately than the nominal material category. Record grades, thicknesses and any surface treatment.

Decide which interfaces need separate screening and which can be assessed in the full assembly. Keep sample identity and layer orientation consistent so a later failure can be traced to the actual material pair.

Plan PP and ABS preparation separately

PP and ABS should have separate trial records. For each grade, identify contamination, release agents, molding or storage history where relevant, and the proposed cleaning process. Evaluate whether the selected treatment and adhesive remain compatible after the required conditioning.

Define the route from coating to pressing

Record whether application is single-sided or double-sided, and whether spraying or another method is proposed. State how coat weight is measured so wet and dry quantities are not confused. Include drying, any required activation, transfer time, pressure and dwell.

Compare candidate conditions within an agreed window and document interruptions as well as steady operation. The process record should make it possible to reproduce the specimen, not merely identify the equipment used.

Combine strength measurements with failure analysis

Define cure, conditioning, peel geometry, speed and sample width before comparing results. Record whether failure occurs at an interface, within the adhesive or within a substrate. Different failure locations can change the interpretation of the same measured force.

Use a matrix covering early handling, final adhesion, specified aging and appearance. A surface-energy reading is a process observation, not a substitute for the aged bond result. Likewise, a strong flat specimen does not establish shaped-part holding.

Connect the material trial to the intended part

Move to the headliner page for coating sag and assembly creep, to door trim for wrapped edges, or to instrument panels for complex geometry and release behavior. These routes add component-specific questions to the common interface evaluation.

For product discussion, request current R-5670/R-60C documentation and send the material grades, layer stack, preparation, process and test targets. A candidate should advance only when the evidence addresses the intended use and the customer's decision criteria.

Questions and answers

Can an ABS adhesive recommendation be applied to every ABS grade?

No. Record the actual grade, finish, preparation and process, then verify adhesion and appearance on representative samples.

Should both surfaces receive adhesive?

Follow the current system instructions and validate the application route for the actual stack. A generic material pairing does not establish the correct method.

What matters besides the peel-force value?

Cure, conditioning, method, failure location and part appearance are needed to interpret the number and decide whether it addresses the project requirement.

R-7206 / R-7110: conditions for bonding PP without activation

R-7206 and R-7110 are modified polyolefin hot-melt adhesives. Compatibility between the non-polar polyolefin and PP systems helps explain direct bonding on confirmed PP grades, clean surfaces and validated processes, without primer, flame or plasma pretreatment.

Omitting activation does not remove the need for cleaning. Control release agents, oil, dust, recycled content and surface condition, then validate peel, heat creep and aged durability on actual parts. This does not cover every PP grade or load, and must not be generalized to all PUD adhesives.
